Historically inspired art for collected interiors. Beautiful, primitive and occasionally peculiar.

Well Considered Works is an independent Michigan art studio creating historically inspired works with a distinctly contemporary point of view. Drawing from British School painting, early American folk art, Dutch still lifes, botanical illustration, natural history and antique ephemera, the collection reimagines the visual language of the past through restrained color, flattened perspective, primitive forms and occasional eccentricity. The resulting works feel at once familiar and difficult to place—as though they might have been discovered in an old house, an overlooked collection or the back of a neglected barn.

Those references become the starting point for new work.

I approach each piece much as I would assemble a room: combining periods, removing what feels unnecessary and allowing something unexpected to interrupt what might otherwise be too polite. A traditional landscape may become unusually spare. A handsome portrait might be deliberately primitive. A familiar animal can suddenly seem slightly peculiar.

Much of the work occupies that territory between sophistication and naïveté. I like works that are beautiful without being precious, and unusual without becoming novelty.

The collection continues to evolve, but the underlying idea remains simple: to make new things that possess some of the character, mystery and permanence of the past.
